An uncle of slain university student Sharon Otieno narrowly escaped assault from angry mourners after he tried to reveal Sharon’s marital background at their parents home in Magare village, Homa Bay Town constituency, on Sunday.
Joseph Okong’o was shouted down as he tried to address members of the public who had showed up to condole with the late Sharon’s family.
Mr. Okong’o began his speech with the background of Sharon’s previous marriage but the crowd would have none of it.
“Sharon was a married woman who stayed in Awendo upto around January when she split from her husband,” he went on.
Sharon’s father Douglas Otieno, however, got angered by his comments and snatched the microphone from Mr. Okongo who was then pushed out of the dais by some youth in readiness for an attack.
Acting Kanyabala Chief Simeon Onano came to Mr. Okong’o’s rescue and led him out of the compound and into his vehicle.
Among those present during the altercation included Women Representatives Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay), Dr. Pamela Odhiambo (Migori), Rosa Buyu (Kisumu) and Janet Ongera (Kisii).
